EQUITABLE PRICING TIERS
By many other names, equitable pricing tiers are found in most every spiritual tradition; in every work of justice (*both.and*). Immerse yourself in them (and in the detachment and openness and unknowing and liminality they invite you toward). Commence all your grounding practices. Talk to your partner or others with whom you make financial decisions. Build capacity to bravely discuss money as a way to soberly see how much it impacts all of our lives; how much, when left unexamined, it increases suffering (whether in the guise of oppression, marginalization, racism, homophobia, transphobia, shame, stigma, trauma, or by any other name). Set an intention in alignment with your integrated Self. Then read about the tiers to help you identify – ethically, responsibly, transparently – where you are situated (based on access to income and wealth more than what you actually have in the bank) and thus what you intend to pay for your sessions in the year ahead. The goal here is Equity; that those with more access will pay more, and those with less access will pay less. The goal here is Collective Healing; or, as bell hooks wrote, in All About Love (1999): “rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. healing is an act of communion.” I invite you to this act of communion. Thank you in advance for generously bringing what you have to the table to share with others. Thank you in advance for fully receiving from this table what others have so generously shared. This is how we all heal, together.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
As a former writer, a Part of me feels that I have borrowed too heavily from the incredible gift of language around these statements from Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Lindsey Bat (thank you, Lindsey, from the bottom of my heart, I am deeply indebted to you).
And yet, as a healer, building a communion of healing, I know in my full Self that Lindsey borrowed from others (see her attributions on the link above, and know that they each also deeply influenced my own Tiers here).
I also benefited from the language of countless other equity-minded healers, including but not limited to: dorimidnight.com, www.kamilyahthetherapist.com, both-and.org, www.lenakassof.com, www.towardfreedomtherapist.com, shannonnisleylpc.com, www.nicoleantoinette.com, www.thelemontreeclinic.com, www.getrightwellness.org, www.turtle-massage.com, www.newpathmhs.com/client-assistance-fund, www.seasons-counseling.org/client-assistance, www.serenitypastoralcounseling.org/client-assistance-fund, www.neurodiversitidy.how, perennialacupuncture.com, lifemovesmt.com
Finally, many Equitable Pricing Tiers also, appropriately, include Land Acknowledgments. We all live and work on stolen ancestral lands. As such, I gratefully acknowledge that I live and work in Baltimore City, on the unceded lands of the Piscataway, Susquehannock, and Nentego (Nanticoke) Nations, and later home to many tribal nations including Lumbee and Cherokee. Among the 10% of my income that I donate each year, I commit to making this gratitude tangible with donations to the Baltimore American Indian Center (BAIC). It is the very least I can do.
